"Wideband Down Conversion and Channelisation Techniques for FPGA"

Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to explore various practical wideband digital down conversion and channelisation techniques that can be efficiently implemented using the latest Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices. The paper gives a brief overview of current FPGA architectures and capabilities. Various down-conversion and channelisation architectures are described including the pipelined FFT, Polyphase DFT’s, multiple digital down-converters (DDC’s) the Pipelined Frequency Transform (PFT) and its derivative, the Tuneable PFT (TPFT). The main objective is to establish the optimum solution for different application types such as wideband spectral analysis. System issues and limits for today's and future devices are explored including digitised bandwidth, frequency resolution and discrimination, dynamic range and hardware configurations.
