Dear Colleague,
We would like to draw your attention to the RadioNet Scientific Workshop "The Fate of the Gas in Galaxies". The workshop will be hosted on 12-14 July 2006 by ASTRON (Dwingeloo, NL). This meeting is part of a series of scientific workshops sponsored and organized by the EU RadioNet Consortium within the Sixth Framework Program of the European Commission.
The workshop aims at bringing together scientists working on topics related to how gas is acquired by galaxies, how gas is lost by galaxies through the effects of outflows and what is the fate of the gas that remains in galaxies. We hope to bring together specialists working in different spectral bands, as well as theoreticians.
Science background
Despite promising recent work on galaxy formation and evolution in hierarchical scenarios, much of the details of the role of gas accretion and gas outflows are still poorly known. The workshop will focus on some of these issues:
- The fate of the gas in mergers and smooth accretion. How much, when and in which
- way, is gas accreted and how much gas is removed to the outer regions or IGM?
- Gas dynamics in outflows. The role of star formation-induced galactic
- (super)winds and of AGN driven outflows. What impact do the gas and the blackhole have on each other?
- What is the spatial structure of remnants and how does it depend on initial
- conditions and other processes occurring during the accretion? The process of disk (re)formation; how much gas is used in star formation?
- Is there a difference in gas accretion between spirals and ellipticals? - Gas structures at high-z, such as giant Lya nebulae. What is the origin and
- the fate of the gas content?
***************************************************************************** ***** Because of time and space limitations, attendance at the workshop ***** ***** is limited to 60 participants. ***** *****************************************************************************
We expect that the majority of the participants will be able to give an oral presentation. A limited number of poster presentations will also be possible. Ample time will be reserved for informal discussion. Registration can be done through the web site of the workshop.
We are looking forward to seeing you in Dwingeloo!
On behalf of the Organising Team:
