Dear colleagues, following the meetings in Dwingeloo (1990), in Leiden (1996) and in Kerastari (2002), INAF Istituto di Radioastronomia is organizing a workshop on GHz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) and Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) radio sources.

The GHz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) and Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) radio sources are the most likely candidates for the progenitors of the large scale radio sources. The GPS and CSS sources are powerful but compact radio sources whose spectra are generally simple and convex with peaks near 1 GHz and 100 MHz respectively. The GPS sources are entirely contained within the extent of the narrow line region (< 1 kpc) while the CSS sources are contained entirely within the host galaxy (< 15 kpc). The GPS and CSS sources provide (1) probes of the ISM of the host galaxy and (2) constraints on the physics of radio galaxy evolution. As these sources propagate through their host galaxy they provide feedback in the form of strong shocks which may influence star formation in the galaxy and further fuelling of the AGN.

Rapid progress has been made in our understanding of GPS and CSS sources through the combination of high resolution radio, optical and UV imaging as well as IR and X-ray observations. Recent work has extended samples of sources to lower power and higher peak frequency. This workshop will bring together observers from across the spectrum with theorists for an informal and stimulating exchange of ideas and results. Please feel free to forward this announcement to colleagues who might be interested in this topic.

The location of the Workshop will be the seaside resort of Riccione, Italy, starting in the afternoon of May 26th to May 29th, 2008. The venue is the Hotel Lungomare (www.lungomare.com/eng/layout.html) where participants to the meeting will be accommodated as well.

The registration fee includes: hotel accommodation, Conference dinner, social event, Conference material. The hotel accommodation includes half board (breakfast + lunch) for 4 nights starting Monday 26. Please note that the accommodation dates for the Workshop are fixed: if you want to arrive earlier or stay longer please contact the Hotel Lungomare directly.

The registration fee is 550 Euro if paid before Feb 29th, 2008, 600 Euros if paid later. We will possibly apply a lower fee to students.

The number of participants is limited to about 50-60 persons, thus we encourage you to pre-register as soon as possible at the web page: http://www.ira.inaf.it/~cssgps/registration.php

* Deadline for pre-registration: January 15th, 2008. * Second announcement: end January, 2008. * Early payment (discounted fee): February 29th, 2008 * End of registration: April 15th, 2008
