"The EVN DBBC Project"

It is presented a description of a project to develop a fully digital backend system for radioastronomy. The system allows to digital down convert a number of portions of IF band as coming from a receiver in the frequency range 0 - 1024 MHz, with selectable bandwidth and tuning.

Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) components show continuous increasing performance in terms of gate density and working frequency, giving a real opportunity to take advantages within a concept of fully upgrading methodology. Then, they have been considered as main elements along with the VSI interfacing standard for realize an hardware environment that can be container for present and near future needs, with the data transport and correlators evolution.

This development is going to produce prototypes for testing the performance of different architectures taking into account theoretical achievable performance and the actual features.
