Groningen
The workshop will be held in the city of Groningen. This city, dating back to the year 1004, is the bustling commercial and cultural centre of the northern part of the Netherlands. It has about 180000 inhabitants and the only university in the north of the Netherlands. The large number of students (40000) make this a young city, and consequently one can find plenty of restaurants, bars and cafes. It boasts some of the well-known Dutch canals, lined with old warehouses, and among many fine historical buildings a recently completely restored railway station from 1896 (check out the main hall if you arrive by train). Modern architecture is also well represented, one notable example being the Groninger Museum, located on an artificial island in the canal right opposite of the entrance to the railway station. For international visitors who will be flying to the Netherlands, the most convenient access to Groningen is through Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. A train ride of about 2.5 hours will take you to Groningen. Train platforms are located directly below the main plaza at Schiphol airport (see this page). Train schedules can be found here. The train leaving at 21 minutes past the hour connects directly to Groningen. However, as this train is split partway through the journey to go to different destinations, make sure you are seated in the part headed for Groningen (indicated on the outside of the carriages).
