Meetings
Water Vapour Radiometer Intercomparison Meeting, Munich, 26 July 2005
Good absolute calibration of WVRs is critical for phase referencing VLBI observations and when using WVRs with geodetic VLBI to measure the zenith wet delay component. However, one cannot easily tell how good the calibration of a radiometer is because one does not know the true zenith wet delay. Instead, one can compare the radiometer to other radiometers or GPS or VLBI measurements. Two such co-location experiments were performed in April 2005 in Wettzell and in July 2005 in Effelsberg to operate a variety of different radiometers and GPS and geodetic VLBI in parallel and compare their wet delay measurements. This was followed by this meeting in Munich of the people involved in the analysis of data from each system to compare the performance of the different radiometers.

GPS-WVR Comparison Organization Meeting, Potsdam, 21 March 2006
Aim: to validate the GPS slant delay method of measuring tropospheric propagation delay by comparing to WVR-based tropospheric delay measured along the same line of sight using the Effelsberg WVR and co-located GPS station. This meeting was to inform the two groups of the development activities and performance of WVR-based and GPS-based tropospheric delay measurements and to find common interests for collaboration.

Workshop on Measurement of Atmospheric Water Vapour: Theory, Techniques, Astronomical and Geodetic Applications
Aim: This meeting brought together astronomers, geodesists and meteorologists who are developing and using radiometers to measure tropospheric constitutents for correction of propagation effects and for atmospheric studies. The meeting provided a platform to learn about and compare the different hardware and retrieval algorithms in use and to identify potential for improvements.
Workshop Topics:
- Review of WVRs for geodetic VLBI: performance and requirements
- Review of WVRs for opacity and phase correction of radio and mm observations
- Tutorial on atmospheric processes and radiative transfer effects
- Review of retrieval algorithms used in meteorology
- Tour of the Wettzell Fundamental Station
